Have you ever wondered what a "Position of Trust" Means?

Many legal systems including Ireland and Britain consider crimes committed by a person in a position of trust over the victim a serious matter – such as when a perpetrator holds a political position of authority over another person, then uses that position to his or her advantage to commit a crime or to injure the victim in some way, and or making unwanted sexual advances.

In recent weeks a lot has been said and indeed covered up – in what has become known as the “pillow affair.” These devastating revelations are causing a significant problem for Mary Lou McDonald of Sinn Fein Ireland on both sides of the border.

The story is about how a young woman sought advice at the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) and was invited to a meeting at the Dáil by her former employer who represents a rural Leinster Constituency for SinnFéin; the young woman whose identity is known to the writer has been protected and is identified as “A”.

Ms “A” visited the Dáil to discuss how the (TD) could assist her in seeking employment at the European Parliament, or within the EU parliamentary civil service, losing track of time (due to the pair visiting the Dáil bar) she discovered that the gates of the Oireachtas had been closed by the Irish Army trapping her car within the confines of the parliamentary estate.

It was then suggested that accommodation had been arranged and that she should not worry – they proceeded to a Dublin hotel to discover only one room had been booked by the TD and it contained only one bed.

It is worth mentioning that up to this point, the (TD) was a perfect gentleman; so, MS “A” placed a pillow down the middle of the bed and warned the TD to stay on his side of it….

However, during the night our gentleman turned into a lecherous monster stripping to his underwear and promptly climbing back into the bed complaining that the Pillow was causing him backache; the young lady insisted that the Pillow not be removed and spent the night in fear of his unwanted advances and any intended assault upon her dignity and honour and has suffered stress ever since.

But it doesn’t stop here; Ms “A” has made a written complaint to Sinn Féin, and several months later the fruits of an internal investigation remain unknown which is compounding the distress felt and one has to wonder if this is a complete whitewash, or a cover-up.

I want to temporarily take you back to the hotel where our young ladies' presence was acknowledged by another TD who thus far has remained silent on her passing encounter; that (TD) represents a Border Constituency for Sinn Féin, who herself is no stranger to violence.

You would hope that this (TD) would be running to Ms “A” defence as she has stated very clearly that she has been subjected to a violent attack in the past - why then is she silent on her passing encounter at a Dublin Hotel, or does she know?? Hopefully, she has not been silenced???

The Irish people deserve a lot better, it is a frightening prospect of the lack of accountability and people need to decide if they want democracy or dictatorship; the people must make a decision, and if you love your country, and I’m assuming you do – then, ladies and gentlemen, we must hold those who claim to represent the people to account and that is why the Oireachtas must be kicked into play, we need an independent investigation to look into the“pillow affair”. Because perpetrators hate accountability and for too long those who have wielded power in Ireland have shielded themselves from public scrutiny, and today it is a young lady, tomorrow you must ask yourself who is the next victim, perhaps another constituent, or an innocent child, and then, where does this end?

This injustice must end in justice for the victim and the protection of standards in public life; if that means that this (TD) should be expelled from Sinn Féin and the Dáil along with Mary Lou McDonald and the entire Sinn Féin leadership is dismissed that is a price worth paying for democratic accountability and justice for the victim - because this breach of trust is unacceptable.

If the means do not exist to remove a sitting TD then legislation must be enacted to remove the offender and restore the honour of the Oireachtas.
