John Constable's Greatest Work

John Constable's greatest work - his famous view of a hay cart, or 'wain', having its wooden wheels submerged in the water at the end of a long hot day.

Constable completed The Hay Wain in 1821. 200 years on, you can still stand at the exact spot where he set up his easel beside the River Stour at Flatford in Essex and take in the view that inspired him.

John Constable (born June 11, 1776, East Bergholt, Suffolk, England—died March 31, 1837, London) was a major figure in English landscape painting in the early 19th century. He is best known for his paintings of the English countryside, particularly those representing his native valley of the River Stour, an area that came to be known as “Constable country.”
